The City of St. Catharines is installing “Maximum 40 Area Begins” and “Maximum 40 Area Ends” signs at intersections where residential streets meet collector or arterial roads.
The speed limit on these streets will be reduced from 50 km/h to 40 km/h. Residential streets internal to the designated areas will not receive the signs, however the City’s contractor will install approximately 1,300 signs this year.
The change aligns with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, which allows municipalities to lower speed limits area-wide through new gateway speed limit signs.
