The largest radio cash prize in Niagara region history continues to grow!
Classic Rock 91.7 Giant FM’s Cash FX has seen its jackpot now reach $14,400, as listeners from across the region continue to try their shot at guessing the mystery sound that has stumped everyone since March 18th.
Originally capped at $15,000 with one winner early in the contest winning $1,100, Giant FM’s parent company My Broadcasting Corporation added some extra stakes – $500 more if the Toronto Maple Leafs won Game 6 of the first round playoff series against the Boston Bruins. The Leafs won 2-1, so the current jackpot got even larger to $14,400 in cash with an additional $100 gift card to Country Corner Market, a staple in the Niagara area!
“As the contest keeps going, we’re going to have to find ways to add more things to add to the prize total. I’ll leave it at that for now.” says Program Director Dave Devine.
The game is easy – a caller hears a sound on their radio, calls the station to guess, and if they’re right, they win the jackpot. If they’re wrong, the next caller at the cue-to-call has a chance to win it for themselves. Listeners play on weekdays at 8:00am during Giant Mornings with Darlene and Brian, 11:00am with Chris Lukas, as well as 2:00pm, 4:00pm and 5:00pm with Jef and The Great Brandon.
“What’s really exciting about this is that people can visualize how they’re going to spend the money. Life isn’t easy, we know that, it’s going to go a long way for somebody” says Vice-President of Content for MBC, Rob Mise.
“There’s a reason why Giant FM is one of Canada’s biggest radio stations. The listeners are involved, they’re following local news, they love the music, they support our advertisers, and they want to be involved.” says Mise, who adds Giant listeners are very sharp, and he wouldn’t be surprised to see the prize be won sooner or later.
The contest has also led to some unexpected calls for a local business, Bardon Supplies, which has a phone number close to Giant FM’s (Bardon’s number ends in 6197, Giant FM’s is 6917). Mike Kasm, one of the employees at Bardon, says they’ll get the odd wrong-number call from time to time, but never as many as he’s seen during Cash FX.
Through over 140 wrong guesses, listeners have tried everything from a nail gun, to slot machines, to a potato chopper.
A list of all incorrect guesses can be found on our website, on the Giant FM Insiders page.
