The St. Lawrence Seaway, including the Welland Canal and its eight locks in Port Colborne, Thorold, and St. Catharines, is closing for the season today.
Although the canal will stay closed until spring, some ships may receive special permission to transit after the official closure.
During the winter, the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation will carry out infrastructure maintenance projects, leading to temporary closures of several Welland Canal bridges for both motorists and pedestrians.
