It’s not often that something rotten is a good thing, but in this case, it’s a great thing.
The Port Colborne Operatic Society is bringing the Broadway musical Something Rotten! to the stage at Lakeshore Catholic High School.
The musical is set in 1595, and follows the Bottom brothers, Nick and Nigel. Throughout the show, they struggle to find success in the theatrical world as they compete with the wild popularity of their contemporary William Shakespeare.
Throughout the show, there are also a number of ‘Easter Eggs’ that make references to other theatrical pieces, as the musical will often poke fun at the theatre industry.
Wesley Detlor, who plays the lead role Nick Bottom, says the feedback they’ve had from the first few performances has been great.
Something Rotten! is a newer musical, having only hit the stage on Broadway for the first time in 2015. After two successful years there, it toured the US, Germany, Sweden, South Korea and Czechia.
In speaking with Stage Director Iraina Neufeld, she says because this is a newer piece, audiences are paying closer attention.
She adds that it’s a community theatre production, meaning that the majority of the cast and crew are volunteers who are doing this out of their passion for theatre.
There have been three showings to this point, with five more between this weekend and next weekend. Tickets can be purchased at the Port Colborne Operatic Society’s website.
