The province recently announced it is bringing back cursive writing into the language curriculum next school year.
Cursive writing became optional back in 2006. Education Minister Stephen Lecce says it is a critical life skill in helping young people to express more substantively to think more critically, and ultimately, to express more authentically.

Lecce says if we want to boost reading instruction, we have to embrace some of those time-tested strategies that have worked for generations.
According to the new curriculum, cursive writing as an expectation will start in Grade 3.
