As part of our ongoing coverage of the 2025 Federal Election, we will be highlighting each of Niagara’s four ridings, their candidates, and how those ridings have changed compared to the last election.
Today – we’re focusing on the re-bordered riding of Niagara Falls-Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The riding, which has been contested as just Niagara Falls since the 1950s, has seen some adjustments ahead of the 2025 federal election. The riding no longer contains Fort Erie, which has been shifted to the Niagara South riding.
In the 2021 election, the riding was defended by Conservative Candidate Tony Baldinelli, who defeated Liberal hopeful Andrea Kaiser by just over 3000 votes. Baldinelli took home just under 38% of the vote, while Kaiser is back once again to run for the Liberal Party.
Running against both Baldinelli and Kaiser is Shannon Mitchell for the NDP, who worked with Ontario NDP MPP Wayne Gates as a constituency assistant, and is also a two-term DSBN trustee.
The People’s Party of Canada has a candidate in Niagara Falls-Niagara-on-the-Lake, as Dinah Althorpe finds her name on the ballot for the PPC. According to her campaign’s website, she says she is deeply committed to values including women’s rights, freedom of expression, and medical rights.
For the Green Party, Celia Taylor is running on a platform focused on the cost of living, affordable housing, and keeping the environment safe for future generations.
Yawar Anwar is representing the Centrist Party of Canada, with a party playform that plans to cut income taxes by 50%, as a means to fix healthcare and housing.
For the Libertarian Party of Canada, Daniel Shakhmundes will be presenting the party. A computer scientist based in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Shakhmundes says he aligns with the party’s views to reduce governmental responsibilities and expenses.
